Identify the different template types in your account

Permission required to use this feature: build or import their own templates

There are multiple ways to set up an email template with Campaign Monitor, and you can have an unlimited number of templates. This guide gives you a quick way to identify which type of templates are being used in your account.

To access your saved templates, click your profile image at the top right, then select My templates.

Email builder templates

The email builder is a drag-and-drop content editor built into the campaign creation process.

You can't export email builder templates (to modify the code externally), so it's easy to identify them by checking the template tools menu. Click the menu icon below a template thumbnail. If the menu does not include an "export" option, it's an email builder template.

Template builder templates

Prior to the launch of email builder, Campaign Monitor accounts contained a basic template builder without many customization options. Templates generated with the original template builder can be exported so they can be modified externally, and re-imported as a custom HTML template.

The original template builder has not been available to use since June 2014, but some people still have original, unmodified, template builder templates. It's a two-step process to see if you have one:

  1. Click the menu icon below the template thumbnail to see if the menu includes an export option:

  2. If it does, select Edit from the menu. If it's an unmodified template created with the original template builder, that is what will load.

The original template builder looks like this:

Selecting an "original template builder template" or a custom HTML template (explained below) to create an email, will open it in the custom template content editor. It looks similar to the original template builder, above, but it's for adding and editing content only.

Custom HTML templates

This refers to email templates coded externally and imported into your account. It includes designs coded from scratch as well as designs generated by the original template builder that have been modified externally and re-imported.

It's a two-step process to see if you have a custom HTML template:

  1. Click the menu icon below the template thumbnail to see if the menu includes an export option.
  2. If it does, select Edit from the menu. If it's a custom HTML template, the template import page will load.

The template import page looks like this:

If you need to update a custom template but don't have access to the original HTML/CSS files, select Export from the template menu to download the code.

RSS templates

RSS templates are required for RSS-based workflows. They can be custom coded, using our RSS template tags, or generated by the RSS template builder, which is built into your account.

To check for an RSS template, click the menu icon below the template thumbnail to open the template menu, then select Edit. If it opens in a template builder like the one pictured below, select Content from the editing panel on the left:

If it's an RSS template you'll see an option for selecting the "Article length", as shown above. If not, you're looking at an original template builder template.

Custom RSS templates

To see if it's a custom coded RSS template, click the menu icon to open the template menu, then select Edit. You should see the template import page, pictured above. If so, open the template menu again and select Export.

Then search the exported HTML to see if it contains RSS template tags, for example:

<datarepeater type="rss">

Rename templates

You can rename templates so, in future, it's easier to tell what's what. Click the menu icon to open the template menu, then select Rename.
