Find your tracked email reports in Google Analytics

After you've sent an email containing Google Analytics tracking tags, follow the instructions below for finding the reports in your Google Analytics account.

Find reports for sent emails

To find reporting for email campaigns:

  1. Log in to your Google Analytics account and click Reporting in the top navigation bar.
  2. In the sidebar, click Acquisition > Campaigns > All Campaigns.
  3. To filter out everything except your specific email campaign, click the Secondary dimension dropdown below the "Campaign" primary dimension, then select Acquisition > Medium.
The 'Secondary dimension' dropdown menu with 'Medium' highlighted as the selection
  4. Next to the search field, click advanced.
The search field, next to the 'advanced' text link
  5. Next to the "Include" dropdown, click the Campaign dropdown and select Dimensions > Medium.
The 'Campaign' dropdown menu with 'Medium' highlighted as the selection
  6. In the input field next to the "Containing" dropdown, type "email", then click Apply.

Your email campaign reports are found this way because all email links that have been tagged for tracking with Google Analytics include the parameter utm_medium=email.

Filter by campaign source

To filter results by your "Campaign Source" term instead of the medium:

  1. Log in to your Google Analytics account and click Reporting in the top navigation bar.
  2. In the sidebar, click Acquisition > Campaigns > All Campaigns.
  3. Click the Source primary dimension.
  4. Next to the search field, enter your campaign source term and click the magnifying glass button.

You can also select "Source / Medium" as a primary dimension, to filter by both campaign source and medium. In the advanced filtering options, separate your campaign source term from the medium term with a forward slash, for example: "Email marketing software / email".

Overview of a tracked email report

This section is an introductory guide to the report page for an email sent with Campaign Monitor. Here's an example of what a campaign report looks like in Google Analytics:

At the top of the page is the campaign name: October Newsletter. Below the graph, you see the number of website sessions the campaign has generated so far, the average number of pages viewed per-session, session duration, new users and lots more.

Track sales and conversions

If you are using Google Analytics to measure sales and conversions, use the "Explorer" view to see what percentage of goal conversions or transactions can be attributed to the email campaigns you've sent:

Filter reporting by keyword

To view site usage specific to keywords in your tracking links, filter the reporting for "Campaigns" by clicking Other > Acquisition > Keyword, as shown here:

Track A/B split campaigns

If you are A/B testing your email campaigns, you can filter reports in Google Analytics to see traffic results for Version A of the campaign versus Version B. When you send an A/B split campaign, the version is added to the utm_content parameter, like this:

utm_content=Widget+Factory+Annual+Clearance+Sale+Version+B+CID_2cagbf4589bc1df30fe09ac7fbce5356

To filter by utm_content in your analytics account, find the campaign name and open the report page. Then click Other > Acquisition > Ad Content, as shown here:
