Connecting an AI assistant to Campaign Monitor

This feature is currently in beta and not available to all accounts.

Campaign Monitor supports the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude connect directly to your account. Once connected, you can ask your assistant questions about your campaigns and audience in plain language, and it can prepare drafts for you to review inside Campaign Monitor.

Your assistant never sends anything or changes your account on its own. Every sensitive action is staged as a draft that you review in Campaign Monitor first.

In this article we'll explain:

  • What your assistant can and can't do.
  • How to turn the connection on for your account.
  • How to connect from Claude.
  • How actions work.
  • Data and privacy considerations.
  • How to disconnect or revoke access.
  • Troubleshooting.

What your assistant can do

Your assistant can perform read-only lookups on request, such as:

  • Search past campaigns and review performance (opens, clicks, bounces, unsubscribes).
  • View campaign content and screenshots.
  • List your subscriber lists and see what segmentation is available.
  • Preview a segment definition (nothing is saved).

Your assistant can have edit access to the following for you to review:

  • Start a new campaign draft and add or edit content blocks, images, buttons, and styling.
  • Create a subscriber segment.

What your assistant can't do

Your assistant will never send or schedule a campaign, import or delete subscribers, delete campaigns, lists, or segments, or change billing or account settings. There is no way to ask it to as those actions aren't available through this connection.

Turn it on for your account

An account administrator must enable the connection before anyone can use it.

  1. In Campaign Monitor, click your profile image in the top-right corner, then select Settings.
  2. Go to API & Integrations.
  3. Turn on the MCP connection for your account.

Only administrators can enable this. Once enabled, any user who connects an AI assistant acts with their own Campaign Monitor permissions, the assistant can't see or do more than that user could through the normal app.

Connect from Claude

Claude is currently the supported host for this connection. To connect:

  1. In Claude, go to Settings, then Connectors.
  2. Choose to add a custom connector.
  3. Enter your Campaign Monitor account's server address in the following format:
    https://<your-subdomain>.createsend.com/mcp
  4. Claude will redirect you to Campaign Monitor to sign in and approve the connection, using the same login you already use.
  5. Once approved, you'll be redirected back to Claude, connected.

No API keys or passwords are ever shared with Claude directly, Campaign Monitor handles the sign-in.

How reviewing actions works

Campaign Monitor is always the system that carries out the action, not the AI assistant. When your assistant prepares something—such as a campaign draft or a segment—it stages it in your account and gives you a link to open it directly for review in Campaign Monitor.

Nothing goes live until you review it and choose to send, schedule, or save it yourself, using the same review screens you already know.

Data and privacy

The connection only exposes your own account's data, scoped to your login and permissions.

Campaign and subscriber information may be shared with your AI assistant so it can answer your questions. Avoid asking it to surface sensitive subscriber details you wouldn't otherwise want passed to that tool.

No subscriber lists can be bulk-exported through this connection.

See Campaign Monitor's Privacy Policy for how we handle account data generally.

Disconnecting or revoking access

You can disconnect at any time, from either side.

In Claude: remove the Campaign Monitor connector from Settings, then Connectors.

In Campaign Monitor: Go to Settings, then API & Integrations, and revoke access, or turn off the MCP connection for the whole account. Turning it off at the account level immediately stops all connected AI assistants from reaching your account, including ones you didn't set up yourself.

Revoking access can take up to a minute to fully take effect.

Troubleshooting

Claude says it can't find the connector, or the connection fails

Check the server address is typed exactly, with no trailing slash. Confirm that an administrator has enabled MCP under Settings → API & Integrations.

Sign-in loops back without connecting

Make sure you're signing in with an account that has MCP enabled, and that popups and redirects aren't blocked in your browser.

Assistant says a request was refused

This is expected for anything outside the supported actions above (for example, "send this campaign now"). Review or send the draft yourself inside Campaign Monitor instead.

Assistant can't see a list, segment, or campaign

Confirm the signed-in user has access to that item in Campaign Monitor, the assistant only sees what that user can see.

Need to cut access immediately

Turn off MCP for the account in Settings → API & Integrations. This revokes every connected assistant at once.
